Answer: Me.

The Hare Krishna Pop Song.

This is one that’s overdue.

The other week, while I still had my canvassing job, I was out working in a very well-to-do shopping center. It just so happen that said shopping center had an “Inner Peace Festival” going on. Which is cool, really cool. I wanted to go during my breaks, but said Inner Peace Festival was…..well, this:

A few booths with a couple nuns giving massages and a guy passing out free copies of his cd. No harm, that’s all really nice, and probably really useful to a lot of people.
But, it was the festivals main attraction that got me. In the opposite corner from the massage booths was this big tent-like structure set up, featuring a lotus labyrinth for people to do walking meditations in. Opposite of the labyrinth was a stage, and on that stage was…..

Two white guys with guitars! My absolute favorite thing in the world, that most certainly isn’t overdone….

Anyways, these guys were doing their own pop-ish, acoustic jam versions of many Hindu and Buddhist chants.  Yeah…pop chants. It was gross, I mean, you could tell these guys clearly had no fucking clue what they were actually saying. They could barely pronounce most of the words right. But more importantly, they had no earthly clue as to the origins and importance of the “songs” [note: chants] they were shameless ripping apart. Never mind that these are very important and powerful means of solidarity, meditation, prayer, and praise - they were hip!

On top of that, a chant is a chant and not a song for a reason. Many chants are usually done in only a few or only one note, with the latter being more common. The resonating power of chants clear ones mind and allow for a higher, and more clearer sense of thinking. And the words actually mean important things….

So, moral of story: If you want to pick up a guitar and make a song out of your favorite chant, go for it. Just take the time to know what your taking from. Don’t be a senseless, culturally appropriating douchebag for the sake of “inner peace,” because even though we all need inner peace, like everything else, these a good way of obtaining it - and a not so good way.

Generally, disrespecting entire cultures and beliefs is not the way to go….

This ongoing body of work explores the power dynamics inherent in the questions asked of transgender, transsexual, genderqueer, gender-variant, and/or gender non-conforming people.

Many documentary photographic projects that deal with trans issues exploit the genders of their subjects, pointing to an “otherness” or inappropriately exoticizing their bodies.
